Miranda Carter’s paintings begin in landscape but move beyond description. Expansive skies, water, mist and horizon-like bands become vehicles for exploring the sublime: the simultaneous experience of beauty, awe and uncertainty within the natural world.

Layered colour and intuitive marks allow the surface to retain a sense of change. Forms dissolve, reflections interrupt boundaries and light appears to move through rather than sit upon the image. The paintings reward prolonged looking because their spatial relationships remain unsettled.

Attention is the quiet force within this practice. Carter asks what becomes visible when landscape is not consumed as a quick image. Observation, memory and material improvisation meet on the canvas, creating spaces that feel emotionally specific without being tied to a single identifiable view.

Her studio research includes water-mixable and lower-toxicity paints, recycled or responsibly sourced supports, FSC-certified timber and organic or recycled canvas where suitable. These choices are considered alongside colour, mark-making, conservation and the long-term stability of the work.

She presents sustainability as a continuing discipline rather than a claim of completion. That honesty is important: individual specifications describe particular decisions, not the total footprint of a painting. Alongside them, the work’s sustained attention to landscape encourages a relationship based on presence and responsibility rather than distant consumption.
