John Sabraw has built a distinctive abstract practice around transformation. His paintings combine fluid movement, geological texture and radiant colour, often suggesting rivers, aerial landscapes and the shifting behaviour of natural systems without describing a single place.

The visual language is both spontaneous and controlled. Poured and layered passages are balanced by an exact understanding of surface, scale and composition. Beauty provides the first encounter; the material history of the colour then changes how the work can be understood.

Sabraw is Professor of Art at Ohio University and works across art, science and environmental engineering. His collaborations have brought artists into direct conversation with researchers addressing acid mine drainage, showing how a studio practice can participate in a wider process of experimentation and public understanding.

Sustainability and practice

Sabraw is best known for working with iron oxide recovered during the remediation of streams polluted by acid mine drainage. Scientists and engineers separate the iron from affected water and refine it into a stable artist pigment. The environmental claim is therefore specific: the colour begins with material removed through a real remediation process.

This does not make every aspect of a painting impact-free, nor does the work depend on that claim for its artistic value. Its importance lies in joining material recovery, scientific knowledge and accomplished painting within one coherent practice. Pollution is not simply pictured; part of its residue is made physically present as colour and recast as an image of possibility.
